The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 and is today one of Portugal's most cosmopolitan universities, with a student population of 20,000.

In 1991, Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) was founded as a University of Coimbra initiative. In 2010, IPN won the "Best Science Based Incubator" award during the 9th Annual Incubation Conference in Liverpool, UK.

IPN has supported over 180 firms in 15 years, over 80% of which are still active, with more than 1,700 jobs created. It currently incubates firms having annual revenues of over 75M euros. Incubatees include home energy management startup Unplugg, whose recent victory in the Global Strategic Innovation Startup Challenge gave it the opportunity to incubate in Silicon Valley in 2013.
